Tragic Home Invasion Leaves Family Heartbroken After Young Man’s Murder
The family of Gurjit Singh, a 27-year-old, is grappling with profound sorrow after he was brutally killed in a home invasion in January 2024. This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the Indian community in New Zealand.
Rajinder, 35, has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 17.5 years without the possibility of parole. His actions resulted in Gurjit suffering over 40 stab wounds, and there was even an attempt at decapitation. Gurjit’s body was discovered in his front yard, alongside signs of struggle, including a broken window. Critical evidence, such as CCTV footage and DNA, helped secure Rajinder’s conviction.
Prosecutor Richard Smith highlighted that blood found at the scene had a staggering chance—over 500 million times more likely—to belong to Rajinder than to an unrelated person. Additionally, traces of his blood and hair were found on Gurjit’s hands.
The court learned that Rajinder had meticulously planned the attack, purchasing a knife and observing Gurjit’s movements as he returned home. It’s believed that Rajinder harbored resentment over Gurjit’s marriage to a woman he had also pursued through a marriage broker.
Justice Rachel Dunningham remarked that Rajinder’s motive appeared to stem not from jealousy, but from a desire to “punish” Gurjit and his wife for rejecting an arranged marriage.
Gurjit moved to New Zealand in 2016, hoping to provide for his elderly parents back in India, who sold their land to fund his move.
The heartbreaking impact on Gurjit’s family is evident. They describe their lives as “shattered,” expressing sorrow over losing their son just as he was about to lift them from financial struggles. Gurjit’s widow, Kamaljeet Kaur, expressed how his loss has left her emotionally wrecked, recalling their dreams of building a future together.
“Gurjit was the heart of our home,” she said, sorrowfully.
Gurjit’s father, Nishan Singh, expressed gratitude that justice was served, though it has been a tough journey for the family throughout the trial.
Detective Senior Sergeant Nik Leigh, who worked on the case, mentioned the extensive effort from the police, with nearly 80 officers involved. He recalled the emotional reaction from Gurjit’s family during the verdict, stating it was moving to witness their relief and pain.
Throughout the trial, Rajinder remained silent. The court also ordered him to pay over $8,000 in reparations to Gurjit’s family.
Friends remembered Gurjit as a compassionate soul who would always help others. Before his tragic death, he had been enjoying a pizza party with friends, demonstrating the vibrant life he led.
This horrific crime has left Kamaljeet facing stigma and uncertainty as she tries to rebuild her life without her beloved husband. Gurjit’s family voiced their anguish, noting that Rajinder robbed them of their future and peace.
“This has turned our lives upside down,” they lamented.
