Paramedic’s Remarkable Delivery Amid Conflict

Dr. Gal Rosen, an Israeli paramedic, is making headlines for his courageous work in saving lives under the threat of missile attacks. With a steady heart and a quick mind, he runs from one emergency to another, recalling his childhood loss to terrorism. Now, as a civilian with Tel Aviv’s Magen David Adom (MDA), he continues his lifesaving mission amidst ongoing conflicts.

Recently, Dr. Rosen experienced a blend of joy and terror during a clinical emergency. He successfully delivered a healthy baby boy to a mother amid the chaos of missile sirens, marking his fifth emergency delivery but the first under such high pressure.

“We need to make tough choices sometimes,” he shared in a rare quiet moment between emergencies, reflecting on the challenges of his job. But this time, he had a heartwarming story to share with loved ones, contrasting the usual grim realities he avoids discussing.

The miraculous delivery took place last Thursday. As sirens blared and missile alerts sounded, Dr. Rosen helped the mother deliver her child safely inside their apartment. Just moments after the baby was born, the threat of an impending missile attack meant quick actions were necessary.

He placed the newborn on the mother’s chest for crucial bonding and even assisted the father in cutting the umbilical cord before swiftly helping them to a nearby shelter.

“I wanted to keep the moment as normal as possible for them,” he said. Dr. Rosen recalled the surreal experience as he and the father hurried to safety, running to find a secure building amid the chaos.

The baby was born amidst the alarms, with family members gathering in the shelter to meet the newborn. “It was surreal,” Rosen reflected. “People were congratulating the family right there in the middle of a crisis.”

The parents, who asked to remain private, expressed their deep gratitude. They described the experience as frightening but were relieved by how the MDA team kept them calm and helped them through the delivery.

“We’re happy everything ended safely,” they shared, acknowledging the unexpected atmosphere during what should have been a peaceful moment.

Despite the noise of war overhead, the room erupted in applause as witnesses celebrated the new life. After some time, the team ushered the family out of the shelter, safely navigating through the remaining chaos.

Dr. Rosen’s resolve to care for others stems from a personal history of loss. He lost his mother to terrorist violence as a child, which has shaped his determination to save lives and support families in crisis. “I want to ensure no one else has to endure loss like mine,” he said.

With each delivery, he applies not just medical expertise but also the empathy that comes from his experiences. “In moments like these, I don’t think; I just act,” he remarked, illustrating the profound impact of his work amid the darkness of war.

Now, a week later, he reflects on the excitement of that delivery, despite being awake for over 24 hours. The joy of bringing life into the world amidst adversity is an experience he will carry with him, a shining moment in his challenging but vital role as a paramedic in Israel.
