Plane Crash in Crimea Claims Lives of 29
A tragic plane crash in Crimea has resulted in the loss of six crew members and 23 passengers, according to reports from Russian news agencies early Wednesday. The incident involved an An-26 military transport aircraft, which was on a scheduled flight over the Crimean Peninsula, an area Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
The military lost contact with the plane around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, before it reportedly crashed into a cliff, as indicated by sources at the scene. The Russian Investigative Committee has confirmed that there were a total of 30 people on board, including seven crew members. It remains unclear if any crew member survived.
In response to the incident, authorities have launched a criminal investigation focused on potential violations of flight regulations and are conducting a search in the mountainous areas of the Bakhchisarai district. Initial findings suggest that a technical malfunction may have caused the crash, with no indications of external interference reported.
Since the Kremlin deployed troops in Ukraine, accidents involving Russian military aircraft have become increasingly common. Recent incidents include a crash in the Ivanovo region in December that killed seven crew members, and a MiG-31 fighter jet crash in April 2025 in the Lipetsk region.
This latest incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of military operations in the region and the challenges faced by Russian air forces.
