Rajasthan Royals Name Riyan Parag as New Captain for IPL 2026
The Rajasthan Royals have decided to name Riyan Parag as their captain for IPL 2026, a choice that has surprised some fans, especially with experienced players like Ravindra Jadeja on the team. According to head coach Kumar Sangakkara, this decision came after a thorough evaluation process, highlighting Parag’s maturity and clear vision.
As the team prepares for their first match against Chennai Super Kings, Sangakkara shared that five players were considered for the captaincy role, including Jadeja and Sandeep Sharma. Each candidate underwent a rigorous assessment focused not just on their game strategy but also on their leadership qualities and character.
Sangakkara explained, “We had strict criteria in place for choosing our captain. Each candidate was capable, but discussions revealed Parag’s growth as a leader.” Parag stood out due to his ability to handle challenging questions and show self-awareness during discussions.
“Riyan showed a lot of maturity in his responses, even when faced with tough questions,” Sangakkara noted. “His clear vision for the team made him the preferred choice.”
The Royals are focused on more than just traditional captaincy skills. They seek a leader who can inspire the entire team, think critically, and stay authentic under pressure. “Leadership is about influencing others, not just the younger players, but also the veterans,” Sangakkara emphasized.
Although Parag had a rough stint as a stand-in captain last season, winning just two of eight matches, the management believes in his potential for growth. Sangakkara mentioned that mistakes are part of the learning process, and Parag will have plenty of support from experienced teammates like Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Jofra Archer.
The leadership change comes after a major trade that saw former captain Sanju Samson leave the team, with Jadeja and Sam Curran joining from Chennai Super Kings. Sangakkara acknowledged the difficulty of this transition but believes it was essential for the team’s balance.
“We are sad to see Sanju go; he has been a fantastic player for us. But we gained two strong players in Jadeja and Sam, which helps us a lot,” he said, adding that they were disappointed to lose Sam due to injury.
As the Royals gear up for the season, all eyes will be on Riyan Parag and his leadership journey in IPL 2026.
