Devdutt Padikkal’s Journey in IPL: Finding His Footing

Devdutt Padikkal made his debut in the IPL back in 2020, entering the scene with a blend of style and runs. However, there were doubts about whether his playing style could adapt to the fast-evolving demands of T20 cricket. Although he showed calmness on the field, frequently scoring, discussions often revolved around what more he needed to bring to his game.

Evolving Game Dynamics

The format began shifting rapidly. Teams sought players who could attack from the very first ball, with strike rates becoming crucial for batting success. At that time, Padikkal seemed to find himself at a crossroads, possessing great technique and timing, but needing to increase his urgency and adaptability.

Navigating Challenges

Between 2022 and 2024, lingering questions about his performance continued. His tenure with Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants revealed moments of his potential, but consistency was still lacking. Frequent changes in his batting order may have hindered his growth, especially since he was still familiarizing himself with different batting roles. His initial impact as a promising opener faded as his performance declined.

However, returning to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) provided him with clarity and direction. With well-defined expectations, the work he put in began to translate into noticeable improvements in his game.

Padikkal emphasized this shift, crediting players like Andy Flower and Dinesh Karthik for guiding him. “It was a challenge, as I had to make several changes, not just skill-wise but mentally. I had to believe in my ability to play this style of cricket,” Padikkal shared.

Signs of Progress

Recent changes in his approach are now evident. He appears more confident during powerplays and is making smarter decisions while building his innings. His scoring options are clearer, and he’s managing the game’s tempo effectively.

These improvements were on full display during the opening match of IPL 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Padikkal showcased his natural stroke play but with a newfound authority. He cleared the boundary multiple times, including an impressive flick over deep mid-wicket, demonstrating control throughout his innings.

RCB’s Transformation

Padikkal’s evolution reflects RCB’s journey as well. Historically, the team could deliver strong performances but often struggled with consistency over a season. They relied heavily on individual brilliance without a solid structure.

This changed in 2025 when RCB clinched their first IPL title after years of near-misses. This victory addressed a long-standing gap, pushing the team to focus on consistency rather than isolated strong performances. Their win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opener of 2026 highlighted a more settled team, showcasing measured gameplay and effective management of different game phases.

Understanding home conditions became increasingly important for RCB, especially given the reputation of M Chinnaswamy Stadium for high scores. The pitch has evolved, requiring RCB to adjust their approach.

Padikkal commented on this change, highlighting that the perception of the pitch has shifted over time. “Chinnaswamy used to be viewed as a flat track, but it’s become bouncier and requires a different mindset,” he noted.

Looking Ahead

The focus for RCB is now on maintaining strong performances at home by adapting to conditions and improving consistency. Creating a robust record at Chinnaswamy will depend on their ability to read the pitch effectively and execute their strategies reliably.

Padikkal expressed his joy about returning to Chinnaswamy, saying, “Playing here again has been fantastic. We missed it during the domestic season, but being back in front of this crowd was a lot of fun.”

The early signs indicate that both Padikkal and RCB are beginning to understand their roles better, developing clearer methods, and figuring out what it takes to achieve sustained success.
