Iraq’s Prime Minister Promises Response to US Airstrikes Targeting PMF Bases

U.S. Military Strikes Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq

The U.S. military has intensified its actions in Iraq, launching airstrikes against the headquarters of the Iran-backed Shiite militia, known as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), as well as a home belonging to its leader. This move marks a significant escalation in the U.S. response to threats posed by Iranian-supported groups in the region.

General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently stated that U.S. helicopters have been targeting these militias to safeguard American forces and interests in Iraq.

In response to these airstrikes, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani condemned the attacks, asserting that they violate Iraq’s sovereignty. He announced that Iraq would confront and respond to any military actions against the PMF and other Iraqi forces, highlighting the nation’s right to self-defense.

Growing Tensions

The Iraqi government has also indicated plans to summon both the U.S. and Iranian ambassadors for discussions regarding these tensions. Some Kurdish officials have questioned whether the Iraqi government intends to challenge U.S. actions.

According to reports, additional airstrikes on PMF locations are ongoing, with at least one recent strike hitting a base in Anbar province.

The PMF has a history of targeting U.S. diplomatic missions and interests in Iraq, particularly following a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iranian military assets. The PMF has been implicated in attacks on American personnel in the past.

U.S. Condemnation of Militias

A State Department spokesperson stated that the U.S. strongly condemns the attacks by Iranian-backed militias against American interests in Iraq and emphasizes the need for the Iraqi government to protect U.S. personnel and properties.

The spokesperson added that allowing these militias to operate freely in Iraq threatens not only U.S. interests but also Iraq’s stability and contributes to a potential spillover into broader regional conflicts.

PMF Leadership Under Pressure

The airstrikes have resulted in significant losses for the PMF, including the death of some key leaders. The situation has raised concerns about their capability to operate effectively.

Experts suggest that the U.S. maintains considerable influence over Iraq, potentially using sanctions to deter militia activities.

As militarized tensions persist, the conflict showcases ongoing complexities between Iraqi sovereignty and external influences, especially from Iranian-backed groups operating within Iraq’s borders.
