Trump Reiterates Commitment to Keep Strait of Hormuz Open
Former President Donald Trump expressed his desire to maintain the safety of the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing its importance for nations that depend on this crucial shipping route in the Middle East. Speaking to reporters in Florida, he highlighted the strait’s vital role in global energy supply amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
The Strait of Hormuz, measuring about 21 miles at its narrowest point, lies between Iran and Oman. It is a critical chokepoint through which approximately 20 million barrels of oil and a significant portion of the world’s liquefied natural gas pass daily.
Trump stated, “We’re really helping countries like China here, as they rely on energy from the straits. It’s my honor to support this.” His remarks come just before a scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month.
In light of rising tensions in the region, the U.S. has deployed aircraft carriers and strike platforms across the Middle East. Trump also noted that the U.S. is looking to ease oil-related sanctions on certain countries to help stabilize energy prices amid the conflict.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has openly declared it will not permit the export of any oil, adding to concerns about potential disruptions.
Trump reaffirmed his stance regarding Iran in a recent post, warning that any attempt to obstruct oil flow in the strait would lead to a severe U.S. response. He emphasized that the safety of this key waterway is not just about protecting American interests but also serves as a gesture of goodwill toward partner nations such as China.
“This is a gift from the United States to China and all nations that utilize the Hormuz Strait,” he said, hoping that his efforts would be appreciated.
