Iranian Hacker Killed Following Israeli Strike

An Iranian hacker, Mohammad Mehdi Farhadi Ramin, who was wanted by the FBI, has reportedly been killed in an Israeli operation in Iran. This information was shared by an Iranian media outlet, stating that Ramin’s funeral was held recently in Hamadan, Iran.

Ramin had been a target of U.S. authorities since 2020 for his involvement in cyber crimes that allegedly date back to at least 2013. The FBI accused him of stealing the identities of American citizens and accessing sensitive national security information.

His alleged activities included hacking into companies, universities, and U.S. defense contractors. Authorities said he not only stole credit card numbers and Social Security information but also sold this stolen data on black markets.

The U.S. had previously indicted Ramin for his role in a significant cyber intrusion campaign that was allegedly linked to the Iranian government. He and a co-defendant were said to have tampered with websites to spread ideological messages, including hostile threats towards nations like the U.S. and Israel.

Ramin was known for compromising email accounts, capturing sensitive information without the users’ knowledge. This behavior posed serious threats to national security, resulting in U.S. authorities labeling him a fugitive.

Officials stated that his actions led to the theft of vast amounts of sensitive data, raising concerns about its implications for national security, foreign policy, and scientific research.

Further details on this event are awaited as the Pentagon is currently being contacted for more information.
