Iran’s Theocracy on Shaky Ground as Khamenei’s Passing Sparks Uncertainty

US Base in Saudi Arabia Targeted Amid Iranian Leadership Shift

A US base in Saudi Arabia is now under scrutiny following recent U.S.-Israel military actions against Iran. This escalation comes in the wake of a significant event: the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His passing marks the end of over thirty years of strict governance, prompting a crucial leadership transition that many in the regime had anticipated.

An Arab diplomat informed media outlets that Khamenei’s death is a considerable setback for Iran. However, the Iranian regime had taken measures in anticipation of this scenario, preparing for potential challenges ahead. The diplomat emphasized that merely surviving this period of uncertainty would be seen as a success for Tehran.

A report from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) explores three possible paths for Iran following Khamenei’s death: maintaining the current regime, a military takeover, or complete collapse of the government structure.

The CFR’s analysis emphasizes that even with a change in leadership, significant political reforms might not occur quickly due to the regime’s established power structure. The core of power largely resides with a select group of clerics and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Predictions lean towards a scenario of “Khamenei-ism without Khamenei,” where a successor continues the Islamic Republic’s agenda while relying on established security institutions for stability and control.

The succession process within Iran is built into its constitution. An interim council, made up of the president, chief justice, and a member of the Guardian Council, would be formed to manage the leadership transition. The IRGC is expected to play a crucial role in determining the new leadership.

In recent years, the Office of the Supreme Leader has evolved into a powerful entity that governs not just politics but also military and economic foundations, reinforcing the regime’s grip beyond Khamenei’s presence.

The CFR concluded that the regime’s true strength lies in this intricate power structure, which will play a significant role in shaping Iran’s future, even after Khamenei’s departure.
