Sweden Clamps Down on Russian Drone Near French Aircraft Carrier

Sweden’s Armed Forces recently intercepted a drone believed to be Russian while it approached the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which was docked in Malmö for NATO exercises. This incident took place on February 25 during the LA FAYETTE 26 mission, aimed at enhancing NATO’s naval presence in the Baltic Sea amid increasing tensions with Russia.

The carrier is a key asset of the French Navy, and its visit to Sweden highlighted the importance of cooperation among NATO allies. As the drone neared the carrier, it was detected by Swedish naval forces, prompting them to take action. Reports indicate that the drone was launched from a nearby Russian ship and was moving toward the carrier.

In response, Swedish operatives deployed electronic countermeasures that successfully jammed the drone’s control systems, leading to a loss of contact. A Swedish Navy vessel spotted the drone during its patrols in the Öresund Strait, underscoring concerns regarding Russian surveillance activities near Western military assets.

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson suggested that the drone was likely from Russia, especially given the presence of a Russian military vessel nearby at the time. French military officials confirmed that the jamming system functioned effectively, stating that operations on board the Charles de Gaulle remained uninterrupted.

This incident comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, particularly following a series of Russian strikes on Ukraine, which prompted Poland to scramble fighter jets. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also issued warnings regarding potential nuclear responses, raising alarms among NATO members.

While it’s still unclear whether the drone returned to its vessel or ended up in the sea after being jammed, the swift action taken by Swedish authorities illustrates their commitment to safeguarding military assets amid growing geopolitical concerns.
