KATHMANDU: A tragic bus accident occurred early Monday morning in western Nepal, resulting in the loss of 19 lives, including a British national, according to police reports.

So far, only nine of the deceased have been identified. The bus was carrying a total of 44 passengers.

Among the 25 individuals who sustained injuries were a New Zealander and a Chinese national. The bus was traveling from the popular tourist destination, Pokhara, to the capital city of Kathmandu when it veered off the road and plunged about 200 meters (approximately 650 feet) down a steep slope in the Dhading district, which is located around 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Kathmandu. The statement from police indicated that the injured passengers are currently receiving medical care in hospitals in Kathmandu.

Sadly, authorities have little hope of finding survivors in this incident, as reports indicate 55 people are still unaccounted for following the crash.

Road accidents are a common occurrence in Nepal, particularly due to the challenging mountainous terrain and poor road conditions. Every year, many lives are lost in road accidents throughout the country.
