Vatican Declines Participation in Trump’s Gaza Recovery Board
The Vatican has decided not to join President Donald Trump’s newly established Board of Peace, which aims to aid recovery efforts in Gaza following the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, shared this news, indicating that the Holy See finds the board’s structure somewhat incompatible with its own mission.
Parolin highlighted some reservations, including concerns over the organization’s nature, which he believes differs from that of traditional nations. He mentioned that while it’s commendable to see efforts being made for peace, there are critical issues that need to be addressed. He emphasized the importance of the United Nations playing a central role in managing international crises.
The Board of Peace, launched earlier this year, includes representatives from almost 20 countries, with its primary focus being the recovery in the Gaza Strip. Recently, Israel joined the board ahead of a meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
During the initial charter signing event in Davos, Switzerland, leaders from 17 countries participated, including officials from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Poland and Italy have also opted out of joining the board.
Trump announced that members have collectively pledged over $5 billion in aid for Gaza, a commitment he plans to formalize in an upcoming meeting in Washington, D.C.
