Rohit Sharma Sets Sights on 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa

India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, has expressed his strong desire to win the ODI World Cup in 2027, firmly stating that he has no plans to retire from the 50-over format anytime soon. This declaration comes as discussions regarding his future in ODIs intensify, especially after his recent performance against New Zealand, where he scored just 61 runs over three matches.

Debates about a potential generational shift in the team have been prompted by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s impressive century in a recent ODI against South Africa. Despite this, Rohit remains committed to his role, emphasizing his dream of lifting the World Cup trophy—a goal he has cherished since childhood.

In a heartfelt video that has circulated widely online, Rohit shared his deep emotional connection to the 50-over World Cup, recalling how it was the pinnacle of cricket for him before the advent of the T20 format and IPL. “I’ve always wanted to win the World Cup for my country,” he said, reflecting on the weight of the trophy and his determination to achieve this goal. “I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen,” he added.

Rohit’s statements come at a time when his spot in the ODI lineup is under scrutiny. However, he clearly indicated that he is not ready to step back just yet. He views the 2027 World Cup as unfinished business, especially after leading India to the finals in 2023, where they faced a tough loss to Australia.

As the World Cup in South Africa is still over a year away, conversations about Rohit’s future in the format are likely to continue. For now, he is focused on training hard and fulfilling his dream of securing victory for India. Rohit is expected to return to ODI action during the England tour in July 2026.
