Suspects to Be Interrogated in Moscow Assassination Attempt
According to reports from a Russian newspaper, authorities plan to interrogate two suspects in the shooting of a senior military intelligence official in Moscow. The suspects are believed to be involved in the attempted assassination of Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev, who was attacked at his apartment on Friday.
The business daily Kommersant stated that these suspects would be questioned soon, with potential charges to follow, as detailed by sources connected to the investigation. Alekseyev, who serves as the deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, was shot multiple times and was quickly taken to a hospital for treatment.
Witnesses reported that the shooter disguised himself as a delivery person. During the attack, Alekseyev was hit in the foot and arm, and when he allegedly tried to disarm the attacker, he was shot again in the chest before the assailant fled the scene.
Following successful surgery, Alekseyev regained consciousness on Saturday and remains under medical supervision, with his injuries now deemed not life-threatening.
In light of the attack, the Russian Investigative Committee has opened a case for attempted murder and illegal weapon possession. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Ukraine of being behind the attack, suggesting it aimed to disrupt ongoing peace discussions. However, Ukraine has denied any connection to the incident.
Alekseyev has faced U.S. sanctions for alleged involvement in cyber operations against the United States and has also been sanctioned by the European Union over a separate incident in the UK.
This assassination attempt comes as efforts continue to negotiate peace between Russia and Ukraine, with both nations recently agreeing on a prisoner swap, according to officials involved in the discussions.
