Brief Overview: Tragic Drone Strike in Ukraine

A drone attack in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least 15 coal miners. They were traveling in a bus after finishing their shift when the strike occurred, making it one of the deadliest assaults on energy workers since the conflict began.

Emergency services responded quickly, extinguishing a fire ignited by the drone strike. Seven additional workers were reported injured in the incident. Officials from DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, labeled the attack as a “terrorist act against civilians.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a deliberate assault on innocent people, emphasizing that such actions only highlight the ongoing suffering caused by the conflict. Earlier that day, he announced that planned peace talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. had been postponed and rescheduled for February in Abu Dhabi.

Zelenskyy expressed readiness for serious discussions, hoping for a resolution that could bring a dignified end to the war. He also noted an increase in Russian drone activities against civilian targets, reporting over 980 drones and nearly 1,100 bombs used in the past week.

The head of DTEK described this incident as the deadliest since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, stressing that this unprovoked attack will be remembered as a dark chapter in their history. DTEK is currently providing support to those affected and the families of the victims.
