War Casualties Could Reach 2 Million by 2026
A new report warns that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could lead to nearly 2 million casualties by spring 2026. This figure comprises soldiers who have been killed, injured, or gone missing from both sides.
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Russia may have already seen 1.2 million casualties, which includes around 325,000 soldiers who have died between February 2022 and December 2025. Ukraine’s losses are estimated to be between 500,000 and 600,000, with approximately 140,000 troop deaths. Currently, it’s believed that the total casualties for both countries could be around 1.8 million.
Determining precise figures for military losses has proven difficult since neither Russia nor Ukraine regularly updates their casualty reports. Both countries are also known to emphasize their opponent’s losses, complicating the picture further. Notably, Russia has publicly admitted to just over 6,000 soldier deaths.
Activists and independent journalists have reported that many details regarding military losses in Russia have been suppressed by the state-controlled media.
Talks between US, Russia, and Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted recent discussions involving representatives from the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine in the UAE, describing them as “constructive.” Following these meetings, Zelenskyy noted that ongoing discussions could take place soon.
Russia’s Military Strategy in Question
The report by CSIS raises concerns about Russia’s high casualty rates, stating that their losses are significantly greater than those of Ukraine. The estimated casualty ratio stands between 2:1 and 2.5:1 in favor of Ukraine. The report attributes Russia’s struggles to poor tactics, low morale, and corruption within its ranks, combined with Ukraine’s effective defensive strategies.
Despite claims of gaining ground in Ukraine, the CSIS report indicates that Russia has been advancing at an alarmingly slow rate, averaging merely 15 to 70 meters per day during key operations since January 2024.
As the conflict nears its fourth anniversary, both sides continue to battle, inflicting injuries and fatalities on one another. Recently, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes on an apartment block in Kyiv resulted in two deaths, along with injuries from attacks in other cities like Odesa and Kryvyi Rih.
This ongoing conflict, marked by heavy losses, highlights the grim reality faced by both nations and the urgent need for a resolution.
