India Dominates New Zealand in First T20I to Take Series Lead
In an exciting opening match of the T20 series, India triumphed over New Zealand by 48 runs at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur on January 21. This victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The game saw a total of over 400 runs scored, with Abhishek Sharma’s impressive performance playing a key role in India’s success.
India chose to bat first and delivered a remarkable innings, achieving their highest-ever T20 total of 238 for 7 against New Zealand. This surpassed their previous record of 234 for 4, set just last year in Ahmedabad. Despite a shaky beginning, India’s batting gradually picked up pace, underscoring their resilience.
Sanju Samson’s early dismissal for just 10 runs was a disappointment, and Ishan Kishan, returning to T20I action after two years, only contributed 8 runs. At that point, India was struggling at 27 for 2. However, what followed was an incredible display of batting that shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favor.
Big Hitting from Abhishek and Suryakumar
The turning point came with the partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, who unleashed a barrage of runs against the New Zealand bowlers. Abhishek achieved a stunning 50 off just 22 balls, making it the fastest fifty by an Indian in T20Is against New Zealand. He went on to score an explosive 84 runs off just 35 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes along the way.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar added 32 runs off 22 balls, reaching a milestone of 9,000 T20 runs in his career. Together, the duo formed a crucial 99-run partnership for the third wicket, setting up a solid foundation for India.
Rinku Singh Shines at the End
After the fall of two key wickets, Rinku Singh stepped up, showcasing his finishing skills with an impressive unbeaten 44 off 20 balls. His powerful hitting in the final overs included two fours and two sixes, particularly against Daryl Mitchell, wrapping up India’s innings on a high note. Hardik Pandya also chipped in with a quickfire 25 runs, ensuring the run rate remained strong.
For New Zealand, Jacob Duffy stood out with figures of 2 for 27, while Kyle Jamieson took two wickets but was costly, conceding 54 runs.
New Zealand Struggles in Chase
In response, New Zealand faced immediate trouble, losing two wickets in the first two overs. Devon Conway fell for a duck, and Rachin Ravindra was dismissed shortly after, leaving the visitors reeling at 1 for 2. Despite a brief recovery led by Tim Robinson and Glenn Phillips, the required run rate proved too challenging.
Robinson scored 21 runs off 15 balls before being dismissed, and Phillips put up a brave fight, hitting 78 runs off 40 balls. He and Mark Chapman shared a 79-run partnership, but with 108 runs needed from the last 39 deliveries, the pressure was immense.
India’s Bowling Secures the Win
The match was practically sealed when Axar Patel took the wicket of Phillips in the 14th over. After Phillips’ dismissal, New Zealand struggled to mount a comeback. India maintained tight control over the game, with Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube each claiming two wickets. Dube was even close to a hat-trick before Kyle Jamieson prevented it.
Despite a minor injury scare for Axar, who hurt his finger, India remained steady and secured a comprehensive victory. With this convincing win, India is now looking ahead to the second T20I in Raipur on January 23.
