RCB Advances to WPL 2026 Playoffs with Fifth Consecutive Win
On January 19, RCB secured a spot in the WPL 2026 playoffs by achieving their fifth straight victory in the tournament. Gautami Naik shone with an impressive 73 runs, while a solid bowling effort ensured that Bengaluru easily defeated the Giants, who struggled throughout their innings.
With this achievement, RCB extended their winning streak to six games, marking the longest run in the competition’s history. On the other hand, the Gujarat team faced their third consecutive defeat, with their batting line-up faltering early. Aside from Ashleigh Gardner’s 54 runs, the rest of the Gujarat batters found it difficult to build momentum, even playing on what was supposed to be their home ground in Vadodara. RCB’s fans were vocal in their support, especially as Sayali Satghare made key early breakthroughs for RCB. Stepping in to replace well-loved player Ellyse Perry, Satghare had already shown herself capable, taking two wickets in the first over of her last match against Delhi Capitals.
The trend continued in this game as she first dismissed Beth Mooney and then sent Sophie Devine back to the pavilion. This quick start left Gujarat struggling at four for two within just two overs while chasing a target of 179 runs.
Lauren Bell, known for her consistent performances, quickly added another wicket to her season tally. Anushka Sharma, returning after missing a few games, looked steady at the crease, hitting some pretty boundaries alongside Gardner. However, with a powerplay score of just 29 runs for three wickets, Gujarat needed to accelerate their scoring. Anushka was eventually dismissed while trying to increase the run rate, and Nadine de Klerk also made her mark.
Giants’ Struggles Continue
What began as a hopeful season for the Giants has quickly unraveled. After two initial wins, they now find themselves in a tough spot. It was surprising that they sent Kashvee Gautam to bat instead of Bharti Fulmali, especially since Fulmali had been performing well with a high strike rate in her recent matches. Unfortunately, Gautam fell early, scoring just four runs.
Georgia Wareham’s time at the crease was short-lived as the pressure mounted on the Giants. While Gardner reached her fifty with a couple of big hits, it was the only highlight for Gujarat fans during the innings. Despite some innovative shots from Kanwer, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome, and RCB celebrated their victory, advancing to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Gujarat will need to regroup and reassess as they prepare to face the UP Warriorz on January 22.
RCB Finds New Talents
Before the season began, RCB faced a setback with Perry’s withdrawal. In her absence, with a history of impressive runs and wickets, the team looked for new stars to step up. Lauren Bell and Grace Harris have been standout players, but RCB also needed contributions from local talent.
In this match, RCB lost Harris and Georgia Voll quickly, leaving Smriti Mandhana in need of a partner. Gautami answered the call, delivering a remarkable innings when it was crucial. Determined to make the most of her opportunity, she formed a crucial 60-run partnership with Mandhana.
While playing the anchor role, Mandhana helped Gautami find her rhythm. Starting with a boundary, Gautami quickly built her score, eventually reaching her fifty in just 42 balls. After her landmark, she partnered with Richa Ghosh, resulting in a 69-run stand that put RCB in a strong position.
Reflecting on her innings, Gautami noted, “When I walked out, the pitch was a bit tough to bat on, so my plan was to build the innings. I focused on rotating the strike, which worked well.”
By the time she was out for 73 runs off 55 balls, RCB was well set at 142 for five. They capped their innings with a thrilling finish, receiving late contributions from Radha and Shreyanka. In the bowling department, Satghare excelled with figures of three wickets for 21 runs, providing the team management with a pleasant dilemma as they look ahead.
RCB can now take a breather before their next match against Delhi Capitals on January 24.
