Bhopal: US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, recently honored the victims of the tragic 2008 Mumbai terror attacks by visiting the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.
In a touching post on social media platform X, Ambassador Gor expressed, “May such a tragedy never happen again. I visited the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, remembering the 166 innocent lives lost, including 6 Americans. I honour the bravery of the Indian security forces and am proud that under President Trump, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning these horrific attacks.”
This visit marks a significant moment in Ambassador Gor’s tenure, which began after he presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu earlier in January 2026.
The attacks on November 26, 2008, carried out by terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), lasted over four days and targeted key locations such as the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, Nariman House Jewish centre, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and Cama Hospital. The coordinated attacks resulted in the loss of 166 lives, including foreign nationals, and left many injured, making it one of the most shocking acts of urban terrorism in recent history.
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian businessman linked to LeT scout David Headley, was identified as a key planner. He allegedly provided crucial logistical support for the attacks. After lengthy legal discussions, Rana was extradited by the United States to India in April 2025, allowing him to face trial for conspiracy and support relating to the attacks. This transfer was seen as a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against terrorism and met a long-held request from India for accountability.
Ambassador Gor’s message underscores the strong US-India alliance in counter-terrorism efforts. He praised the courage of the Indian security forces, including the National Security Guards, Mumbai Police, and Marine Commandos, who courageously fought the attackers to end the sieges and rescue hostages.
The 26/11 memorials, particularly the one at the restored Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, serve as powerful symbols of resilience, remembrance, and a collective commitment to prevent future tragedies. Gor’s visit and statements reinforce the shared values of justice and security between the two nations, highlighting their commitment to combatting terrorism together in a world facing evolving threats.
