Wesley So Takes Lead on First Day of Open Blitz Chess
Wesley So wrapped up the first day of the Open Blitz tournament as the leader, securing 7 out of 9 points through a series of thrilling and surprising matches. Close behind him was Arjun Erigaisi, who finished just half a point lower, maintaining his steady performance in the fast-paced format. Throughout the day, there were dramatic changes in the rankings, with unexpected outcomes and some notable errors from leading players.
The competition kicked off with Erigaisi taking advantage of an early blunder by Volodar Murzin in the opening round. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi capitalized on an unusual mistake by Wesley So during his first game. Hans Niemann also claimed a victory against R Praggnanandhaa, who made a significant mistake in a tricky queen endgame. In a display of his experience, Viswanathan Anand managed to hold Wei Yi to a draw, despite being down a pawn.
One of the highlights of the day was Nihal Sarin’s quick victory over Anand in just 21 moves during Round 2, which epitomized the intense nature of Blitz chess. Erigaisi kept his momentum going, winning against Wei Yi and Aravindh Chithambaram, and later just managed to defeat Nihal Sarin in a drawn-out endgame, staying close to the top of the scoreboard.
A pivotal moment occurred in Round 4, where Erigaisi made a bold queen sacrifice to win against Anand in a Ruy Lopez game, demonstrating impressive calculation under time pressure. So made a strong recovery in Round 6 by taking advantage of Erigaisi’s mistakes to secure a vital win, regaining his spot among the leaders.
Anand bounced back with an important win over Niemann, keeping himself in the running. Round 8 was crucial, as Anand checkmated Vidit, Praggnanandhaa won against Erigaisi, and So outplayed Niemann, resulting in more shifts in the leaderboard.
As the first day came to a close, Wesley So managed to hold Wei Yi to a draw, while Erigaisi won against Vidit Gujrathi to remain just behind So. Nihal Sarin finished the day in third place with 5.5 points, keeping the competition exciting for the upcoming rounds.
In the Women’s Blitz, Carissa Yip started strong, winning her first four games before facing a setback against Vantika Agrawal. Stavroula Tsolakidou later defeated Vantika with a powerful performance utilizing her bishops, and Aleksandra Goryachkina remained a steady competitor throughout.
A critical draw between Carissa and Goryachkina near the end of the session left Carissa in the lead with 6 points. Stavroula, Goryachkina, and R Vaishali ended the day just half a point behind, making the Women’s Blitz race highly competitive as they head into the next rounds.
