Russia Claims Use of Hypersonic Missile in Ukraine Attack Amid Denials
On Friday, Russia announced it employed its newly developed hypersonic Oreshnik missile in an attack against Ukraine. Official statements from the Kremlin indicated that this strike was a response to an alleged Ukrainian drone assault on a residence of President Vladimir Putin, a claim that Ukraine has vehemently denied.
Ukrainian and American officials have expressed skepticism about Russia’s assertions regarding the purported attack on Putin’s residence. Ukraine referred to it as “an absurd lie,” and former President Donald Trump also questioned the truth of the matter, implying that an unrelated incident occurred nearby.
This marks the second deployment of Russia’s Oreshnik missile, which Putin claims is hard to intercept due to its high speed. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the missile targeted vital infrastructure in Ukraine. Reports suggest that it struck an underground natural gas storage facility in the Lviv region, although specific details of the impact were not disclosed. Lviv’s Mayor, Andriy Sadoviy, confirmed damage to critical infrastructure.
In a social media update, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the situation, noting ongoing recovery efforts. He reported significant damage, with twenty residential buildings affected and at least four fatalities, including a member of an ambulance crew, in the capital.
Zelenskyy detailed that the attack involved a vast array of munitions: 242 drones, 13 ballistic missiles, one Oreshnik missile, and 22 cruise missiles. He highlighted that the strikes primarily targeted energy facilities and civilian infrastructure, particularly as the region endures a severe cold spell. He condemned the attack, stating it aimed to disrupt the lives of ordinary people, but reassured citizens that measures are being taken to restore heating and electricity.
Additionally, he noted damage to a building housing the Embassy of Qatar during the assaults.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a strong international response, particularly from the United States, to press Russia towards diplomatic solutions rather than violence. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department reiterated commitment to resolving the conflict through diplomacy, indicating that this remains the only path to lasting peace.
The situation continues to evolve, and discussions are likely to develop as efforts to address the crisis persist.
