State Reports Record-High Flu Hospitalizations in Just One Week

Flu Hospitalizations Reach Record High in New York

The New York State Department of Health has reported a concerning spike in flu hospitalizations, marking a record number in just one week. According to a press release issued on January 2, the state has seen an increase in hospital visits as flu cases continue to rise both locally and across the nation.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that New York State, including New York City, has consistently reported the highest levels of respiratory illnesses in the country. Other states are also experiencing high levels of respiratory activity.

During the week from December 26, 2025, to January 2, 2026, there were 4,546 hospitalizations due to the flu—an increase of nearly 1,000 from the previous week, which already set a record for flu cases in a single week.

Dr. James McDonald, New York’s Acting Commissioner of Health, highlighted the seriousness of this flu season compared to those of the past. He stated, “There is still time to get a flu shot, and remember, flu can be treated with antiviral medication within 48 hours of symptoms starting, as your doctor thinks best.”

Health experts are strongly urging people to get vaccinated against the flu, viewing it as a key step in preventing the spread of the virus. Dr. Neil Maniar, a professor of public health, noted that although the peak flu season typically occurs in January, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. He emphasized that the vaccine can still protect against severe illness caused by a specific variant currently circulating.

Flu symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and cough. A specific mutation of the influenza virus known as subclade K has been linked to the current rise in flu cases, leading to more severe symptoms.

As health officials stress the importance of preventive measures, they recommend routine hand washing, avoiding close contact with those who are ill, and staying home when sick to help prevent flu infections. Now is a critical time for individuals, especially those who have yet to get vaccinated, to take action in order to protect themselves and others.
