Novak Djokovic Abruptly Departs PTPA, the Organization He Established

Novak Djokovic Steps Away from Players’ Association Amid Concerns

Novak Djokovic has made a significant decision to leave the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the organization he co-founded six years ago. He cited serious worries about how the group is run, its transparency, and the management of his voice and image as reasons for his departure. This move raises important questions about the future of player representation in professional tennis.

In a social media statement released on Sunday, Djokovic explained his choice: “After careful consideration, I’ve decided to step back completely from the PTPA. This comes after ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented.” He expressed pride in the initial purpose of the PTPA but noted that his values no longer match the current direction of the organization.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who is gearing up for the 2026 Australian Open, stated that he will now focus on “my tennis, my family, and contributing to the sport in ways that reflect my principles and integrity.”

Djokovic’s exit comes at a significant time for the PTPA, which has been involved in legal disputes with tennis’s governing bodies.

What is the PTPA?

The PTPA was co-founded by Djokovic and fellow player Vasek Pospisil in late 2019 and aimed to address long-standing frustrations among players about how professional tennis operates. The organization aimed to give male and female players a united voice that is independent of existing governing bodies such as the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA.

Before the PTPA’s formation, player representation was partially handled through the ATP Player Council, which is part of the ATP Tour structure. Djokovic resigned from that council in 2020 to help create the PTPA, believing players needed a more robust platform to advocate for their interests.

The PTPA was designed as a non-profit association rather than a traditional union, as tennis players are considered independent contractors. Its mission focused on enhancing transparency, improving financial structures, giving players a greater say in scheduling, and ensuring better welfare for all players, especially those outside the top rankings.

Since its inception, the PTPA has stirred controversy within the sport. Instead of merely gathering player feedback, it took significant actions to challenge the status quo. In March 2025, the PTPA launched a class-action lawsuit against the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA, claiming these organizations engaged in unfair practices that harmed players and affected their welfare.

The PTPA also established an executive committee and introduced programs to provide legal and professional support to its members, garnering support from numerous players within the ATP and WTA.

This bold approach led to criticism. The ATP and WTA dismissed the lawsuit as unfounded and accused the PTPA of causing division within the sport. Some critics within the tennis community raised concerns over whether the PTPA could effect meaningful change.

Experts suggest that Djokovic’s departure reflects underlying disagreements on the group’s strategy, especially regarding certain legal approaches he was uncomfortable with. His absence could diminish the organization’s influence in future negotiations with tennis authorities, potentially inviting a strategic rethink for the PTPA.
