Sourav Ganguly’s Coaching Debut Ends in Defeat for Pretoria Capitals
In his first match as head coach, Sourav Ganguly’s Pretoria Capitals faced a tough loss against the Jo’burg Super Kings in the SA20 league on Saturday, December 27. Under Ganguly, who took over from Jonathan Trott, the Capitals fell short by 22 runs, largely due to a standout bowling performance from the Super Kings.
Before the season, the Capitals made significant moves in the auction, bringing in talented players like Dewald Brevis and Keshav Maharaj. Unfortunately, their contributions didn’t make a big impact this time, as Brevis scored just six runs and Maharaj ended the match without taking a wicket.
The Super Kings set a target of 168 runs, buoyed by Rilee Rossouw’s 48 runs and Wiaan Mulder’s 43. A late surge from Akeal Hosein, who hit 22 runs off just 10 balls, helped push the score to a challenging total at SuperSport Park, known for being favorable for chasing teams.
The Capitals began their chase confidently, scoring 48 runs during the powerplay and enjoying a solid opening partnership of 71 runs between Will Smeed and Bryce Parsons. However, the innings took a turn for the worse when Smeed was dismissed in the ninth over.
From that point, the Capitals struggled significantly, falling to 89 for five by the 13th over as Duan Jansen wreaked havoc with the ball. Jansen, the twin brother of Marco Jansen, claimed crucial wickets, taking down Parsons, Shai Hope, Connor Estherhuizen, and Daniel Smith, ending with impressive figures of four wickets for 23 runs in four overs.
After Jansen’s breakthrough, Richard Gleeson stepped in to dismantle the lower order, finishing with two wickets for 33 runs. Only four Capitals players managed to score in double digits, leaving the team in a disappointing position by the end of the match.
Having finished fifth last season, the Capitals will be eager to regroup and bounce back when they face off against the two-time champions, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, on Monday, December 29.
