Jair Bolsonaro Biopic Underway with Support from Family
A film about Brazil’s imprisoned former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is officially in the works, as confirmed by his son, Carlos Bolsonaro.
In a recent post on social media platform X, Carlos celebrated actor Jim Caviezel’s role in portraying his father. He expressed gratitude, calling Caviezel a figure whose impact would be respected by many. Carlos described collaborating with Caviezel as one of the best experiences of his life, emphasizing values such as faith and freedom.
Caviezel, known for his roles in “The Passion of the Christ” and “Sound of Freedom,” has also been associated with far-right groups in the U.S. His involvement in the project has drawn attention due to his controversial political messaging.
The biopic, titled “Dark Horse,” aims to depict a heroic image of Bolsonaro, focusing on his 2018 presidential campaign. Directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh and written by former Bolsonaro Culture Secretary Mário Frias, it presents a supportive view of the ex-president, who is currently serving a 27-year sentence for trying to overturn the 2022 election result.
Bolsonaro has been imprisoned since September for allegedly orchestrating a plan to challenge President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory. Additionally, a court ruling has barred him from holding office until 2030, putting an end to his political ambitions.
From prison, Bolsonaro recently endorsed his son Flávio to run for president in the upcoming 2026 election. Flávio confirmed his decision to challenge Lula, who is seeking a fourth term, stating that he aims to continue his father’s political legacy.
Flávio, the eldest of the Bolsonaro siblings, has already visited his father in prison and described his candidacy as a step toward fulfilling Jair Bolsonaro’s political vision.
The film “Dark Horse” is set to continue production through 2026, with planned filming locations in both Brazil and Mexico.
