Muthusamy Shines with Maiden Century in Test Match

Senuran Muthusamy delivered an outstanding performance, scoring his first Test century and guiding South Africa to a strong position on Day 2 of the second Test in Guwahati. Alongside Kyle Verreynne, Muthusamy resumed his innings with patience and focus, adopting a careful strategy reminiscent of Temba Bavuma. The duo skillfully avoided chasing risky deliveries, capitalizing only on the loose balls.

Muthusamy reached his half-century after 121 balls, then switched gears to play more aggressively, showing remarkable calmness in a pressure-filled situation. Although India managed to break their momentum after Tea when Verreynne was stumped for a tough 45 off 122 balls, South Africa’s progress continued unhindered.

Teaming up with Marco Jansen, Muthusamy kept frustrating the Indian bowlers. They formed a solid partnership that led South Africa past the 400-run mark. By the end of the second session, Muthusamy’s impressive performance had allowed South Africa to take full control of the match.

Who Is Senuran Muthusamy?

Born on February 22, 1994, in Durban, South Africa, Muthusamy comes from a family of Indian origin, with ties to Tamil Nadu. He has stayed connected to his roots, with relatives still living in Nagapattinam.

Muthusamy’s educational journey took him from Clifton College to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he studied social science with a focus on media and marketing. His cricket career began early in Durban, where he stood out in school games and local tournaments.

He played for KwaZulu-Natal from the Under-11 level to the Under-19s, though he initially doubted his ability to become a professional cricketer. His steady progress saw him make it onto South Africa’s Under-19 team, and in the 2015-16 season, he joined the Dolphins as a top-order batsman.

After hitting a career-best 181 against the Knights in early 2017, Muthusamy’s focus shifted. “His batting dipped a bit, but his bowling took off,” recalled former teammate Imraan Khan. This transformation helped him become a genuine all-rounder.

Muthusamy’s strong bowling performances earned him his first Test call-up during South Africa’s 2019 tour of India, where he made his debut in Visakhapatnam. He made an impact right away, taking his first Test wicket by dismissing Indian captain Virat Kohli, showcasing his readiness for the big stage.

Despite facing challenges in securing a permanent spot in the national team due to South Africa’s depth in spin bowling, especially with Keshav Maharaj’s consistent performance, Muthusamy has remained a quietly influential player in the cricket scene.
