The legendary film Sholay, originally released in 1975, is set to make a grand return to theaters with a newly restored 4K version. The release date is officially scheduled for December 12, 2025. This version includes the film’s original climax, envisioned by director Ramesh Sippy, providing audiences a chance to see the ending as it was meant to be experienced five decades ago.
This announcement coincides with veteran actor Dharmendra’s recent stay in the hospital. He starred in the movie alongside Amitabh Bachchan and is now recovering at home.
The restoration was produced by the Film Heritage Foundation in partnership with Sippy Films. The team worked diligently to locate a rare color reversal print from London, along with the original camera negatives. They even found previously lost scenes tucked away in a Mumbai warehouse. The result is a stunning restoration that brings the film back to its original 70mm format.
Earlier this year, Sholay made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and will also be showcased at the Indian Film Festival of Sydney in October. With this upcoming release in India, the restored version is set to reach a broader audience.
One of the key highlights of this re-release is the reinstatement of the original climax, where Thakur confronts Gabbar Singh. This ending had to be changed due to censorship laws during the Emergency period in the 1970s. Ramesh Sippy shared that the ending alteration was out of necessity, as they couldn’t push back against the restrictions at the time. He humorously remarked on how this typical ending wasn’t true to his vision.
With the restored film hitting theaters soon, fans will be able to experience Sholay in a format that honors its artistic integrity and scale, making it a significant moment for cinema lovers everywhere.
