Clashes Erupt in Mexico City as Protesters Confront Police in Fiery Anti-Government Rally

Protests Erupt in Mexico City as Youth Demand Change

Thousands of protesters gathered in Mexico City on Saturday, clashing with police as they attempted to break through a security barrier around the National Palace, home to the federal government. The demonstration, initiated by young people, turned violent in Zocalo Square, where some protesters attacked law enforcement with hammers and chains, leading to the use of tear gas by authorities.

The authorities reported that around 60 police officers sustained minor injuries, with 40 requiring hospitalization. Most of those hospitalized suffered cuts and bruises, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

By Saturday evening, police had detained 20 individuals and referred another 20 for administrative offenses.

This anti-government rally was primarily driven by members of Generation Z, born between the late 1990s and early 2010s. Protesters voiced their concerns over issues like corruption and personal safety.

Arizbeth Garcia, a physician, stressed the need for improved security and better funding for public health, citing fears for her safety and that of her colleagues. Another demonstrator, Rosa Maria Avila, expressed her outrage following the assassination of an activist mayor in Michoacán. She stated that the government must take stronger actions against violence in the country.

Critics have recently targeted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, accusing her administration of being lenient toward organized crime and not doing enough to combat drug cartels. Sheinbaum, who has been in office since October 2024, has faced backlash following a series of high-profile murders, including that of Mayor Carlos Manzo.

Manzo had openly criticized Sheinbaum for her lack of action on safety issues and was murdered shortly after making those statements.

While Sheinbaum has rejected U.S. military support to help combat trafficking and violence, her critics remain concerned about the growing influence of cartels.

Despite her assurances, many believe that under her leadership, the fight against organized crime in Mexico may not see significant changes.
