Pakistan Issues Stark Warning to Taliban Following Breakdown in Peace Talks

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Issues Warning to Taliban After Failed Peace Talks

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif made a strong statement, threatening to “obliterate” the Taliban after recent peace negotiations between the two sides ended without a resolution. The discussions, held in Istanbul, Turkey, concluded without a “workable solution,” according to Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar. This follows a month filled with deadly clashes at the border, where violence has escalated in recent weeks, resulting in numerous casualties.

The talks faltered mainly due to disagreements over various terror groups operating from Afghanistan and launching attacks on Pakistani security forces. On social media, Asif emphasized that Pakistan would not need to use much of its military power to “completely obliterate” the Taliban if necessary.

In an earlier development, Pakistan and the Taliban briefly agreed to a ceasefire brokered in Doha, Qatar, which took effect on October 19. However, a second round of discussions, facilitated by Turkey and Qatar in Istanbul, did not yield any positive outcomes.

Both sides have placed blame on one another regarding the breakdown of talks. Pakistan’s information minister criticized the Afghan delegates, stating they deviated from key topics necessary for progress, accusing them of deflecting important issues.

Recent skirmishes began earlier this month after Pakistan conducted airstrikes targeting leaders of the Pakistani Taliban in Kabul. The Pakistani Taliban has been increasingly active, launching attacks against the Pakistani military, prompting tension between the two nations.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, violence has continued. Asif noted that if negotiations fail, it could lead to “open war.” The recent weekend clashes resulted in the deaths of five Pakistani soldiers and 25 members of the Pakistani Taliban along the border.

The situation remains tense as both countries navigate their complex relationship, with the Taliban unwilling to control the Pakistani Taliban, exacerbating the conflict.
