West Indies Clinch Victory Over Bangladesh in First T20I
On Monday, October 27, the West Indies kicked off their three-match T20I series against Bangladesh with a strong performance, winning by 16 runs. The standout players were Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, who scored 46 and 44 runs respectively, helping their team set a formidable total of 165 for three.
Winning the toss, the West Indies chose to bat first. Their innings got off to a slow start, with just six runs scored in the first two overs. However, the pace picked up when Taskin Ahmed struggled in his second over, allowing three wides and three boundaries. Alick Athanaze and Brandon King formed a solid opening partnership, putting together 59 runs before Athanaze was dismissed by Rishad Hossain in the ninth over. The West Indies then started to find their rhythm, hitting several sixes before Mustafizur Rahman bowled a tight over, slowing their progress.
Taskin Ahmed made a strong comeback by taking two quick wickets, dismissing King and Sherfane Rutherford in the 13th over. Hope stabilized the innings, hitting a couple of sixes off Rishad, but Bangladesh’s chances were hampered when Tanzim Sakib dropped a catch off Powell. This mistake proved costly as Powell launched a flurry of sixes in the final over, boosting the West Indies’ total.
Chasing a challenging target, Bangladesh began well with Tanzid Hasan striking a six and a four off Akeal Hosein in the first over. However, Jayden Seales quickly provided the breakthrough for the West Indies. The Bangladeshi batters struggled during the powerplay, losing three key wickets and finishing at 42 for four.
The West Indies maintained their control as they dismissed Nurul Hassan in the ninth over, leading to further trouble for Bangladesh. Jaker Ali offered some resistance, but his wicket in the 12th over marked a significant turning point in the match.
Despite a late fightback from Sakib and Nusum Ahmed, who added 40 runs for the sixth wicket, the West Indies dismissed Sakib to extinguish Bangladesh’s hopes. Wickets kept falling, and the match ended on a humorous note when Taskin was out hit wicket while attempting a big hit.
For the West Indies, Jason Holder and Jayden Seales each took three wickets. The two teams will meet again for the second T20I on October 29.
