Security Heightened in Navi Mumbai for ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Following Incident in Indore
Navi Mumbai has ramped up security measures for the remaining matches of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 after a troubling incident involving two Australian players in Indore. The players were reportedly assaulted by a man on a motorcycle while traveling to a café on Thursday morning.
The suspect, identified as Aqeel Khan, has been arrested by the police in Madhya Pradesh. In response to this incident, authorities have taken additional steps to ensure the safety of the players in Navi Mumbai, aiming to prevent any recurrence.
A senior police official shared that comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place for the players as they move to and from the stadium and during their stay at the hotel. According to the official, since practice began on October 18, guards have been stationed at all hotels hosting the female players. When the team travels, they are provided with an escort, and around 600 personnel are on-site, including 75 officers.
The official emphasized that players must inform the security team before venturing out alone. “After the incident, we have been further vigilant. Players sometimes go out without notifying us, which can lead to issues. If they let us know in advance, we can ensure their safety,” the officer stated.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the incident, emphasizing that they have a zero-tolerance policy for such behavior. He expressed regret over the event and highlighted India’s reputation for hospitality and warmth. Saikia noted the swift action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the suspect, ensuring that the law will follow its course for justice. He also mentioned that the BCCI will review and strengthen safety protocols as needed.
Following the incident, the Australian players quickly alerted their team security officer, who filed a complaint with local authorities. An FIR was registered against the suspect under relevant sections addressing stalking and criminal force against women. Police were able to identify Khan after an eyewitness recorded his motorcycle number. Authorities revealed that Khan has a history of prior criminal cases.
As safety measures continue to be strengthened, the focus remains on ensuring a secure environment for the players and all involved in the tournament.
