Brief: North Korea Unveils New Missile at Military Parade
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un showcased a new long-range missile during a military parade in Pyongyang, attended by foreign dignitaries. This missile, known as the Hwasong-20, is highlighted by the state media as part of the country’s formidable nuclear capabilities.
The parade, commemorating 80 years since the founding of the Workers’ Party, also featured various types of missiles, including shorter-range and cruise missiles. Kim emphasized the need for the military to develop into an “invincible force” to counter any threats.
Among the international guests were Chinese Premier Li Qiang, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, and Vietnam’s Communist Party leader To Lam. Kim met with Medvedev, who acknowledged the contributions of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine.
Insight: Strengthening Ties Amid Threats
Kim expressed hopes for closer ties with Russia, aiming to collaborate on shared objectives. His sister, Kim Yo Jong, previously warned the U.S. against pursuing denuclearization discussions, asserting that any attempts to pressurize North Korea would be seen as a “mockery.”
If the U.S. does not adapt to the changing dynamics, discussions may remain a distant possibility, according to Kim Yo Jong, emphasizing North Korea’s stance under the banner of its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
