Aman Sehrawat Suspended for One Year by Wrestling Federation of India
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has announced a one-year suspension for Paris Olympics bronze medalist Aman Sehrawat due to a serious lapse in weight management during the Senior World Championships. The 22-year-old wrestler, who was a key contender in the men’s freestyle 57kg category, was disqualified from the competition after weighing in at 1.7 kg over the limit.
In an official letter to Aman, the WFI stated that the suspension applies to all wrestling-related activities at both national and international levels. It is effective immediately from the date of the notice. “This decision is final and binding,” the letter emphasized, stating that Aman could not participate in any WFI-sanctioned events during his suspension.
On September 23, 2025, the WFI had previously issued a notice asking Aman to explain his failure to meet the weight requirement. However, after reviewing Aman’s response, the WFI’s Disciplinary Committee found it unsatisfactory. They clarified that input from the Chief Coach and other coaching staff was considered before making their decision.
The federation pointed to issues of discipline and professionalism, particularly noting Aman’s status as an Olympic medalist, which brings high expectations in terms of conduct. They highlighted that Aman had ample time to prepare for the event, having attended a training camp in Croatia starting August 25, 2025.
The WFI expressed disappointment, stating, “Your failure to manage your weight not only affects your credibility but also reflects poorly on the country, disappointing fans and impacting the wrestling community.” They also mentioned that this situation deprived India of a medal opportunity and resulted in significant financial implications due to expenses incurred during his training and participation.
Alongside Aman’s suspension, Chief Coach Jagmander Singh and three other coaching staff members have been asked to provide explanations regarding their role in monitoring Aman’s weight leading up to the championships.
