Amanjot Kaur: Rising Star of Indian Women’s Cricket

“Just like they say, an injured lion takes a step back to make a significant leap.” These powerful words were spoken by Amanjot Kaur recently. The 25-year-old cricketer has become a vibrant personality both on and off the field, gaining attention not only for her skills but also for her memorable quotes.

Earlier this year, during a challenging period of six months due to an injury, Amanjot encouraged herself with the thought, “I was born to fly. Setbacks will happen, but they won’t stop me.” This fearless spirit was on full display during the Women’s World Cup opener in Guwahati, where she made a striking entrance when her team needed her most.

With a lively crowd at Barsapara Stadium, India opened the World Cup against Sri Lanka. Expectations were high, especially for star opener Smriti Mandhana, who had been in excellent form. However, she was dismissed early, leaving the team struggling at a precarious 124 for 6.

Amanjot to the Rescue

When it seemed like disaster was looming, Amanjot stepped onto the field with confidence. She paired up with Deepti Sharma and began to stabilize the innings. Her initial strokes were calm, but soon she unleashed a flurry of powerful shots, showcasing her natural talent. She scored 57 runs off 56 balls, helping to steer India to a total of 269 in their rain-affected innings.

Amanjot didn’t stop there. After her innings, she was also given the opportunity to bowl, performing admirably and finishing with a figure of 1 for 37.

A Unique Voice Off the Field

Beyond her cricketing talents, Amanjot shines in press conferences, where she seamlessly blends humor with confidence. Her remarks often resemble the catchy dialogues of film icons, keeping the media engaged. When discussing her absence from a previous series, she remarked, “You guys will make me famous for my one-liners!”

She maintained the same unwavering attitude during the World Cup opener, insisting that the game wasn’t lost yet. “We have a full 50 overs to play. Just because we struggled at the start doesn’t mean it’s over,” she explained, exuding optimism.

Amanjot views cricket as unpredictable; she believes that every run counts, and she won’t shy away from taking risks. When asked about luck and dropped catches, she offered a philosophical take, stating, “There’s no such thing as bad luck. Every setback is an opportunity to learn.”

Determination and Resilience

Amanjot’s journey is one of resilience. Following significant injuries, including a stress fracture and ligament tear, she took time to heal and reflect. Raised in a supportive environment, her father, a carpenter, prioritized getting her to practice. With the help of her coach, Nagesh Gupta, she worked hard during her recovery.

She resumed her career with a strong performance in the Women’s ODI Challenger Trophy this year and excelled in the WPL, making a notable impact in every match, averaging 42 with the bat.

After a stellar outing in England, she took a break from playing to ensure she was in top shape for the World Cup. “I want to give my best for the team; it’s either 100% or nothing,” she stated, proving her dedication to the game.

Onward and Upward

As she navigates her first World Cup, Amanjot embraces her experiences as stepping stones for growth. With each challenge, she learns more about herself and her approach to the game.

“Rehab has taught me patience and gratitude,” she noted, thankful for opportunities along her journey. Amanjot Kaur is not just making a name for herself in the cricket world but also inspiring others with her resilience and charm.
