Moscow: Putin and Modi Strengthen Ties Amid U.S. Pressures
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed their strong friendship during a phone conversation, despite growing pressure from Washington concerning their deepening economic relationship.
President Donald Trump has recently increased tariffs on India, which is increasingly purchasing Russian oil, particularly after Western sanctions were imposed on Russia due to its military actions in Ukraine. This discussion came just a day after Modi’s talks with Trump focused on the Ukraine situation and trade tariffs.
The European Union has expressed concerns that India’s oil purchases from Russia and joint military exercises could hinder closer cooperation between India and the EU.
After the call, Putin emphasized the trust and warmth in Russia-India relations during a televised meeting. Modi, communicating on X, stated his dedication to further enhancing their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” while also expressing India’s willingness to contribute to a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
Amidst these developments, Trump and Ukraine continue efforts to diminish Russia’s energy revenue, which they believe supports its military endeavors. Since the onset of the conflict in February 2022, tens of thousands have lost their lives in Ukraine, and millions have been displaced from their homes.
