Protests Turn Deadly in Nepal

Nepal experienced violent protests on Tuesday, resulting in at least 19 fatalities and many more injuries, according to local reports. The unrest erupted mainly among younger demonstrators, who expressed their dissatisfaction with the government by setting fire to parliament and the homes of officials in Kathmandu.

Among the targeted residences was that of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, where his wife was injured in the blaze and rushed to the hospital, as stated by family members.

The protests were initially sparked last week when the government imposed a ban on major social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube. While the ban has since been lifted, demonstrators demand the dissolution of parliament, citing ongoing corruption within political parties.

“I joined the protests because of the widespread corruption in our country,” said student Bishnu Thapa Chetri. “It’s gotten so bad that many of us youth see no future here.”

In the midst of escalating violence, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned after his home was also set ablaze. Black smoke could be seen rising from the government’s main administrative complex, Singha Durbar. Reports also confirmed that two prisons were stormed, leading to nearly 900 inmates escaping.

As the situation worsens, the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu has advised American citizens to stay away from large gatherings. Nepal’s military chief, Ashok Raj Sigdel, indicated that the army might intervene if the violence continues but also called for dialogue with protesters.

The Nepalese government has yet to comment on the recent turmoil.
