South Africa’s talented young cricketer, Dewald Brevis, has made headlines by becoming the most expensive player in the history of SA20. At just 22 years old, he was sold for a staggering R 16.5 million to the Pretoria Capitals during the auction held on September 9 for the 2025-26 season.
Brevis is highly regarded in the cricket world, thanks to his exceptional performances both internationally and in T20 leagues around the globe. The bidding for him was intense, with both the Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals vying for his signature. Ultimately, it was the Capitals who secured him with the winning bid.
Head coach of the Pretoria Capitals, Sourav Ganguly, shared his excitement about bringing Brevis to the team. He praised the young player for his impressive form over the past year, noting, “We’re very happy. I think he’s a very good player. The R 16.5 million price tag speaks for itself, but we’re focused on his quality on the field.”
Ganguly added that Brevis has significantly improved his game, especially after his performances against Australia. “He’s a game changer, which is crucial in T20 cricket. We already have big hitters like Russell and Rutherford, and I believe Brevis will do well here,” he said.
Last season, Brevis was instrumental in helping MI Cape Town win their first SA20 title. He scored 291 runs with an impressive average of 48.5 and a striking strike rate of 184.18. Before Brevis, Aiden Markram held the record for the highest auction price at R 14 million, and before that, Tristan Stubbs was the most expensive player at R 9.2 million during the tournament’s inaugural season in 2023.
The excitement surrounding Brevis’s signing is palpable, and fans are eager to see how he performs in the upcoming season.
