Putin Hails Xi as ‘Dear Friend’ Amidst Strengthening Russia-China Relations

Putin and Xi Highlight Strong Ties Amid Global Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping met recently in Beijing to reaffirm their strong relationship as tensions with the U.S. and Europe escalate over the ongoing war in Ukraine. The meeting took place just ahead of a significant military parade commemorating the end of World War II, marking the 80th anniversary since its conclusion.

Their partnership exemplifies a growing alliance as both nations seek to present a united front against Western pressures, especially in light of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In a related event, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who visited China for a conference with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), expressed criticism towards impending U.N. sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program. He accused Western countries of hypocrisy for claiming Iran is not complying with its commitments when they themselves violated an earlier agreement.

Pezeshkian’s remarks followed recent criticism from Russia and China regarding these sanctions, particularly after European nations indicated they would pursue punitive measures against Iran. The trio of nations—China, Iran, and Russia—sent a letter to the U.N. expressing their opposition to what they described as politically damaging actions by the West.

Moreover, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in Beijing, reportedly on his armored train, where he was welcomed by Chinese officials. His visit raised questions about potential trilateral agreements with Russia and China, particularly as all three leaders have shown increased cooperation.

Xi emphasized the need for solidarity against what he termed “hegemonism and power politics” during his discussions, highlighting the significance of groups like SCO and BRICS, which include Russia and China.

Despite U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent labeling the summit as merely “performative,” a recent natural gas agreement between Putin and Xi points to China’s intention to continue its trade relations with Russia. This comes even amidst looming tariffs from the U.S., which could be triggered if trade negotiations fail by November.

This series of meetings showcases the strategic alliances being formed, raising concerns about the shifting dynamics in global politics.
