Heavy Rains Cause Floods in India, Misinformation Circulates

Recent heavy rains in India have led to devastating floods and landslides, particularly impacting the western city of Mumbai. However, some online videos claiming to show the current conditions have been misidentified, as they are actually clips from a cyclone that hit Mumbai in 2021.

One viral post on social media platforms depicted heavy waves crashing near the Gateway of India, misleading viewers with the caption highlighting Mumbai’s dire situation. Footage showed large waves hitting a coastal building, with people standing in the water nearby.

In response to the severe weather, many flights were rerouted and local trains in Mumbai were disrupted as heavy rainfall caused flooding, forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes.

This August brought two tragic flooding events, resulting in over 100 fatalities in the Himalayan region of northern India. Yet, the videos circulating online were filmed back during Cyclone Tauktae in May 2021, which caused significant damage and loss of life along the western coast.

A quick search revealed that these clips had previously appeared on platforms like YouTube, dated July 2021. The titles clearly indicated they were associated with the earlier cyclone.

Tragically, Cyclone Tauktae resulted in the deaths of at least 155 people and left thousands displaced. News outlets have shared similar visuals that were showcased during that storm, demonstrating the ongoing potential for confusion in times of natural disasters.

Notably, other news channels have reported similar flooding scenarios, often showcasing the Gateway of India as a central point of interest during such events.

As the situation unfolds, it’s crucial to remain vigilant about the accuracy of information shared online, especially during emergencies marked by fierce weather conditions. Misinformation can spread rapidly and create panic, underscoring the need for responsible sharing of verified news.
