Chennai Grand Masters: Nihal Sarin Triumphs Over Arjun Erigaisi as Keymer Gains Momentum

Chennai Grand Masters: Round 4 Overview

In a tense match during the fourth round of the Chennai Grand Masters, Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi faced a challenging defeat against compatriot Nihal Sarin. Meanwhile, Germany’s Vincent Keymer maintained his lead at the top of the tournament with a draw against Anish Giri from the Netherlands.

Sarin’s victory over Erigaisi was hard-fought. Both players kicked off the game with the Reti Opening, a strategic choice that emphasizes piece development over pawn movement. Former World Champion Vishwanathan Anand observed closely as Erigaisi made his first capture on the 15th move. However, as the game progressed, Sarin seized further opportunities, ultimately turning the game in his favor on the 70th move.

In other matches, Murali Kartikeyan achieved a commendable win against Jorden van Foreest, boosting his position in the standings. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi and V Pranav had a closely matched battle that ended in a draw. The all-American showdown between Awonder Liang and Ray Robson also concluded in a draw, with both players earning half a point.

In the Challengers section, Abhimanyu Puranik took the solo lead after a strong victory over Vaishali Rameshbabu. M Pranesh, who had previously been in the lead, fell to second place after drawing his match against Adhiban Baskaran. Diptayan Ghosh secured an important win against Harshavardhan GB, while Leon Luke Mendonca also kept pace by besting Harika Dronavalli. Both Ghosh and Mendonca now share 3 points with Pranesh. Additionally, GM P Iniyan moved ahead with a win against Aryan Chopra, bringing his score to 2.5 points.
