Shubman Gill: A New Era in Indian Cricket?
Former Indian cricketer and now commentator, Mohammad Kaif, believes that Shubman Gill is ready to step into the role of ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma after an impressive performance in England. Gill, who captained India for the first time in a Test series, managed to lead his team to a 2-2 draw, finishing as the top run-scorer in the five-match series.
Many were surprised to see Gill taking charge, especially following the retirement of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. At just 25 years old, Gill embraced the challenge and proved his critics wrong.
Kaif praised Gill’s calm demeanor as a captain, suggesting that his leadership qualities make him a strong candidate for the ODI captaincy in the near future. “He was a composed leader who handled pressure well. He is ready to take on the ODI role, as we don’t know how long Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the team,” Kaif mentioned in a recent discussion on his YouTube channel. He highlighted that Gill has shown he can deliver both runs and effective leadership.
Moreover, Kaif commended Gill for performing under pressure, silencing his doubters with his remarkable batting skills. “He grabbed opportunities in this series,” Kaif said. “When he was announced as captain, there were plenty of questions surrounding his selection due to his record. Yet, he faced a young team and delivered outstanding results, even drawing comparisons to legends like Sir Don Bradman.”
Throughout the series, Gill amassed 754 runs over ten innings, averaging 75.4 with four centuries to his name. He kicked off with a brilliant 147 at Headingley in Leeds and added an impressive 430 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston, where he scored 269 and 161—making it the second-highest match aggregate in this format.
In the fourth Test at Old Trafford, he played a crucial role by scoring a match-saving 103, ensuring India secured a draw. Gill’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Series award, marking a memorable moment in his burgeoning career.
As discussions about the future of Indian cricket unfold, many eyes will be on Shubman Gill and his journey ahead.
