Indian Chess Star Divya Deshmukh Advances to Semifinals in FIDE Women’s World Cup

Indian chess player Divya Deshmukh has made headlines by reaching the semifinals of the FIDE Women’s World Cup. In an exciting quarterfinal match, the 19-year-old emerged victorious in a tie-break against fellow Indian Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli, winning 2-0.

After her win, Divya was visibly emotional, covering her face with her hands as she took a moment to absorb the moment. This victory is significant as it highlights her journey and growth in the competitive world of chess.

Divya’s next challenge will be against China’s Tan Zhongyi, a former world champion. Her performance in the tie-break was impressive, showcasing her tactical skills and confidence, marking this as one of the pivotal moments in her young career.

The match between Divya and Harika was particularly intense. After both players drew their initial games, it went to tie-breaks where Divya’s sharp focus led to her decisive win. With this success, India now has two contenders in the semifinals, as Grandmaster Koneru Humpy also secured her spot.

Humpy earned her place in the semifinals by drawing her second game against China’s Yuxin Song, having won the first. Her strong counterattacking style has ensured that she finishes at least fourth and gives her a chance to compete for a top-three finish, which could qualify her for the Women’s Candidates Tournament.

Meanwhile, R Vaishali’s journey in the tournament ended after a tough match against Tan Zhongyi. Although she had promising positions, a few missteps allowed Tan to take control and advance.

With both Divya and Humpy moving forward, Indian chess fans have plenty to celebrate, and all eyes will be on Divya as she faces Tan Zhongyi for a coveted spot in the final.
