Farokh Engineer Critiques Karun Nair’s Performance in England Series

Former Indian wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has voiced his disappointment with Karun Nair’s performance at the crucial No. 3 batting position during the current series against England. After a long absence of over 3,000 days, Karun returned to the Indian squad, but his performance has not met expectations.

In the three Test matches played so far, the 33-year-old has only managed to score 131 runs, averaging just 21.83. Although Karun has shown promise with some decent starts, he hasn’t been able to build on those beginnings, which has drawn criticism from Engineer. Speaking to a news outlet, he emphasized that while Karun has showcased some impressive strokes, he needs to convert those starts into larger scores, especially in such a vital batting position.

“Karun Nair has been playing well with some nice 20s and 30s. He’s shown great talent with his stroke play, but as a No. 3 batsman, we expect more. We need him to produce substantial runs on the board instead of settling for pretty 30s,” Engineer stated.

A Call for Change

Given Karun’s inconsistent form, there are growing calls for Sai Sudharsan to be included in the lineup. Sudharsan, who played in the first Test and scored 30 in the second innings, is seen as a potential replacement. Engineer suggested that India should focus on putting together the strongest team possible, irrespective of a player’s age.

He remarked, “We need to select the best players available for the match. I haven’t observed much of Sai Sudharsan, but we should prioritize who can contribute the most. Winning is critical, and age shouldn’t factor into the decision if the player can deliver.”

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has also highlighted that while Karun is maintaining good rhythm, the team expects him to score more runs in his current position.

With the series progressing, all eyes will be on the Indian team to see if they make any changes in their batting lineup to boost their performance in upcoming matches.
