West Nile Virus Detected in Metro Atlanta Mosquito Traps

ATLANTA, Ga. – Two mosquito traps in the Atlanta area have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH).

On Sunday, the board revealed that samples from traps in Hapeville and northwest Atlanta showed the presence of the virus. Officials are emphasizing that there are infected mosquitoes in these regions.

Dr. Brandon Leftwich, the Environmental Health Director at FCBOH, stated, “Infected mosquitoes can be harmful and pose a serious health risk to our community. We want to ensure everyone is aware and takes the necessary steps to protect themselves.”

To help fight against mosquito bites, FCBOH recommends following the “5Ds” of prevention:

  1. Dusk/Dawn: Try to stay indoors during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  2. Dress: Wear loose, long-sleeved clothing to cover your skin.
  3. DEET: Use insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin, as it’s the most effective way to repel mosquitoes.
  4. Drain: Empty any containers that hold standing water, as they serve as breeding spots for mosquitoes.
  5. Doors: Ensure doors and windows are sealed tightly and repair any damaged screens.

Additionally, keeping your yard tidy by trimming grass and weeds can help reduce mosquito populations.

If infected mosquitoes are confirmed nearby, FCBOH plans to collaborate with a mosquito control provider to address the issue. Their team will visit local neighborhoods to inform residents about the positive test results and provide tips for prevention.

Stay tuned for further updates on this story.
