Michael Atherton: Rohit Sharma’s Test Retirement Was Anticipated

Rohit Sharma’s Retirement from Test Cricket: A Summary

Former England captain Michael Atherton commented on Rohit Sharma’s recent retirement from Test cricket, stating that it was not unexpected. The 38-year-old Indian cricketer announced his decision on Instagram just before the selection for the England series. Atherton noted that discussions had surfaced about the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering a change in leadership, hinting at a decline in Rohit’s performance and leadership.

Atherton highlighted that Rohit’s form has been slipping, with India losing five of their last six Test matches under his captaincy, which included three losses to New Zealand and a couple in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He emphasized that such a scenario—losing matches while not scoring enough runs—creates a tough environment for any captain.

Reflecting on Rohit’s age and the competitive nature of Indian cricket, Atherton mentioned the wealth of talent available means there is less room for error when results are not favorable. He expressed sadness about Rohit’s retirement, acknowledging his contributions to the sport despite noting that his statistics may not place him among the very top ranks in Test cricket.

Atherton also characterized Rohit’s Test career as a peculiar one, suggesting that while Rohit will be remembered as one of the best ODI openers of all time, his Test journey didn’t reach the same heights. After years of waiting for his chance to play, he eventually averaged just over 40 in Tests, scoring 4301 runs and hitting twelve centuries, which Atherton views as a successful yet not extraordinary record.

In summary, Rohit Sharma’s departure marks the end of an important chapter in his cricket career, and while he will be celebrated for his ODI successes, his Test legacy remains a mixed bag.
