Staying Active in Midlife May Protect Against Alzheimer’s Disease

A recent study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia suggests that remaining active during your 40s and 50s can help your brain fend off early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the physical activity guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO) might offer even more benefits.

Researchers explored how changes in physical activity affect brain health, particularly for those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s. The study found that people who increased their activity levels—especially to meet WHO recommendations—showed a decrease in harmful amyloid buildup in the brain. Staying active or becoming active helped maintain better brain structure compared to individuals who remained inactive.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease starts quietly, with changes in the brain that may occur for years before symptoms appear. This includes the accumulation of amyloid beta, a substance linked to brain degeneration. Experts believe that about one-third of Alzheimer’s cases are influenced by lifestyle choices, sparking interest in how behavior changes can aid in preventing the disease.

Inactive lifestyles are a known risk factor for dementia, while engaging in physical activity can reduce the chances of cognitive decline. Midlife is a critical time for addressing these risks, as brain changes often begin then, particularly in individuals with a family history of Alzheimer’s.

Study Overview

The recent study sought to fill a gap in research by looking at whether increased physical activity aligns with lower amyloid levels and better brain health in middle-aged individuals. The team assessed data from 337 cognitively healthy participants in Catalonia, focusing on those aged 45 to 65 with some family history of Alzheimer’s.

Participants completed questionnaires about their weekly exercise habits and were classified based on their adherence to physical activity guidelines over time. They also underwent brain imaging to evaluate amyloid levels and cortical thickness—important indicators of brain health in relation to Alzheimer’s.

Key Findings

The analysis revealed five groups based on their activity levels, with nearly 30% of participants remaining sedentary. About 15.7% of participants became active and showed the greatest improvements in their exercise habits. Those who maintained inactivity had thinner cortices in brain regions sensitive to Alzheimer’s compared to those who were active.

Interestingly, those who became active had lower amyloid levels than those who stayed inactive, indicating that even small changes in activity can make a difference. This relationship between physical activity and brain health persisted even after accounting for other health factors.

Conclusion

The results underline the importance of being physically active during midlife. Engaging in regular exercise is linked to healthier brain regions and lower levels of amyloid, suggesting potential protective effects against early Alzheimer’s pathology.

The research highlights that any increase in activity—even if it doesn’t fully meet WHO guidelines—can be beneficial. Although the study has limitations, such as being observational and having a relatively homogenous participant group, it suggests that staying active in midlife could enhance resilience against Alzheimer’s, particularly for those at risk.
