Ousmane Dembele Gives PSG the Edge in Champions League Semi-Final Showdown with Arsenal

PSG Edges Arsenal in Champions League Semi-Final

Ousmane Dembele’s early goal was key for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) as they secured a 1-0 victory against Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, April 29. Dembele found the net just four minutes into the match, giving PSG the early lead. The team managed to defend that slim margin effectively, keeping Arsenal at bay and getting one step closer to the finals.

This match marked Arsenal’s first appearance in the Champions League semi-finals since 2009. Despite a sluggish start, the Gunners picked up their pace and had a goal from Mikel Merino disallowed. PSG’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, was busy, making several crucial saves to maintain his clean sheet. The French side could have increased their lead but missed opportunities from Bradley Barcola and Goncalo Ramos kept the score down.

Earlier in the league phase of the Champions League, Arsenal had managed to defeat PSG, but the French club has improved significantly since then and has proven tough against English teams. In the opening 25 minutes, PSG dominated play, with Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia particularly impressive. He assisted Dembele’s goal, marking the latter’s eighth in the competition.

Arsenal initially struggled to respond, and things could have worsened had Marquinhos not directed a header directly at Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya. As the half progressed, Arsenal grew into the game; Gabriel Martinelli almost connected with a cross from Bukayo Saka, but Donnarumma was on hand to save.

The Gunners’ chances of equalizing were dashed when Merino’s header from a Declan Rice free-kick was chalked off following a lengthy VAR review. Despite gaining more control in the second half, Arsenal found it difficult to breach PSG’s defense, with Donnarumma stopping a low shot from Leandro Trossard.

The return leg of this exciting semi-final will take place on May 7.
