Melinda French Gates Shares Insights in New Memoir

Melinda French Gates, the former wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has recently captured attention with the release of her new memoir titled The Next Day. In the book, which debuted this month, Melinda reflects on her personal journey and the transitions in her life, highlighting the value of taking time for introspection during significant changes.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, she offered thoughts on various topics, including valuable advice she received from Warren Buffett, a longtime friend of her ex-husband. Melinda shared how she manages feelings of anxiety and the pressure she places on herself regarding her philanthropic efforts. She quoted Buffett, explaining, “You’re tackling tough problems that society has neglected for a reason, so don’t be too hard on yourself."

A New Chapter: Moving Forward After the Gates Foundation

Melinda co-founded the Gates Foundation in 2000, working alongside Bill Gates, but after stepping away from her role as a full-time mom following her departure from Microsoft in 1996, she redefined her path post-divorce in 2021. She expressed that it felt like the right moment for her to embark on a new journey.

She has started a new venture called Pivotal, which aims to combine philanthropy and venture capital to enhance women’s rights both internationally and domestically. In her memoir, she describes a "clearing" as the time between finishing one phase of life and beginning another—a period she believes is crucial for reflection and growth. “I call it a clearing,” she notes. “There is a lot to learn in that space."

Residing in Seattle, Melinda also touched on her aspirations, her thoughts about her legacy, and the joy she finds in activities like kayaking, illustrating how she seeks balance and happiness in her life moving forward.
