Sehwag Criticizes Underperforming Overseas Players in IPL
Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has openly criticized overseas players Glenn Maxwell and Liam Livingstone for their disappointing performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. During a discussion on Cricbuzz, Sehwag suggested that both players appear more interested in enjoying their time in India rather than focusing on their game.
Sehwag expressed that both Maxwell and Livingstone lack the drive and passion usually expected from professional athletes. He stated that they seem to view their time in the IPL as a vacation rather than an opportunity to win matches for their teams. According to Sehwag, this attitude is evident in their recent struggles on the field.
Both players faced challenges this season, leading to their exclusion from the playing XI for their respective teams, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite high expectations, Maxwell and Livingstone have struggled to make an impact with either bat or ball throughout the tournament.
"Maxwell and Livingstone seem to have lost their hunger for the game. They come to India looking for a holiday rather than to help their teams win. It’s disappointing to see this lack of ambition, especially when they haven’t yet secured a trophy in the IPL," Sehwag pointed out recently.
Reflecting on his experiences, Sehwag mentioned that he has played alongside numerous international players, yet only a handful displayed a real commitment to winning. “Most of these players just talk about performance but fail to deliver on the field,” he added.
Sehwag contrasted Maxwell and Livingstone’s attitude with players like David Warner and AB de Villiers, praising them for their dedication and work ethic in the league. He recalled how Warner, De Villiers, and Glenn McGrath were always eager to contribute and win matches, making selection decisions challenging for him.
On the other hand, Sehwag commented that some players, especially from the West Indies and Sri Lanka, would ask about parties after the semifinals instead of focusing on winning, highlighting a clear difference in mentality.
A History of Conflict: Sehwag and Maxwell
Sehwag and Maxwell’s history in the IPL has been rocky, particularly during Maxwell’s time with Punjab Kings. Maxwell’s recent book revealed some uncomfortable truths about their time together, indicating a significant disagreement regarding team selection and leadership.
In the book, Maxwell mentioned that Sehwag dominated decision-making, which he believed negatively impacted the team’s performance. He recounted an instance where Sehwag rejected the idea of including coaches in a selection group, asserting his authority to choose the starting lineup independently.
Maxwell also recalled a tense moment during a press conference when Sehwag publicly criticized him, which left him feeling sidelined and disappointed. Despite reaching out to Sehwag to express his hurt, Maxwell noted that Sehwag’s response was dismissive, indicating an irreparable rift between the two.
The fallout from their tumultuous relationship ultimately led Maxwell to inform the team’s owners that if Sehwag remained, his time with the franchise was over.
As the IPL continues, fans will keenly watch how players respond to criticism and whether they can regain their form and contribute positively to their teams moving forward.
