In an exciting match on Monday, Beth Mooney delivered an impressive performance, scoring an unbeaten 96 runs as the Gujarat Giants easily defeated the UP Warriorz by 81 runs in the Women’s Premier League. Although Mooney fell short of what would have been the season’s first century, her explosive innings, featuring 17 boundaries off just 59 balls, propelled the Giants to a strong total of 186 runs for 5 wickets. In response, the UP Warriorz crumbled, managing only 105 runs in 17.1 overs.
The defeat was a significant setback for the UP Warriorz, who slipped from third to fifth place in the standings. They got off to a disastrous start, finding themselves in trouble at 36 for 5 by the eighth over. Their batting lineup struggled against the Giants’ bowlers, who were relentless and did not allow any room for a comeback.
Deandra Dottin made an impact right away, taking two wickets in the first over, sending Kiran Navgire and Georgia Voll back to the pavilion for ducks. The Giants, featuring an impressive bowling attack led by Kashvee Gautam (3/11) and Tanuja Kanwar (3/17), made it difficult for the UP batting order to settle. The initial movement of the ball contributed to their struggles, and the middle-order couldn’t muster any significant response when conditions improved.
Grace Harris was the only batter to show some resistance, scoring 25 runs off 30 balls, while others faltered. Indian players like Vrinda Dinesh, captain Deepti Sharma, and Shweta Sehrawat managed just one, six, and five runs, respectively, leaving the team in a tough spot.
The Giants also showcased their batting strength. Mooney partnered with Harleen Deol, who scored 45 runs, to form a solid 101-run partnership for the second wicket after losing Dayalan Hemalatha early for 2 runs. Mooney’s aggressive style was evident as she effortlessly found gaps in the field.
Though Harleen Deol achieved her highest score of the season with six boundaries, she fell short of a half-century, getting out to Sophie Ecclestone, who took 2 wickets for 34 runs in a good bowling stint for the Warriorz.
As the Gujarat Giants celebrated a crucial victory that moved them up to second place in the standings, they left the UP Warriorz with much to ponder as they aim to recover in their upcoming matches.
